Mapping: Building Protected Bike Lanes

Our City has built 150 miles of new bike lanes since 2015, more than any other college town in the United States. However, based on AA GoBike data, as well as earlier feedback from residents and University of Michigan students, bike ridership has decreased from 2020 due to an increase in car traffic, and students no longer feeling safe on the road.

As part of the City's latest climate action plan, Ann Arbor seeks to increase total bike ridership by 50% by 2025. To achieve this goal, Ann Arbor's Department of Transportation wants to build 50 miles of protected bike lanes, by building barriers of existing bike lanes, and building new ones in high priority areas. AADOT needs your help in determining which current lanes need additional protection, and which streets need bike lanes installed.

The map below indicates current protected bike lanes (in Teal) and unprotected bike lanes (in Red), along with current AA GoBike stations. Please place a pin on the map where you'd like to see a protected bike lane, and leave a one-sentence comment on why you currently do not feel safe riding there.

Later on, you'll get a chance to vote on the streets most in need of bike lane service. Construction will begin in November 2021, and new lanes will be ready to use as early as March 2022.

The speed limit on State Street is 30 mph - this bike lane would get way more use if it was properly protected

The bike lane on Division is super useful, but I spend half my time swerving in and out of it because cars are constantly parked in the bike lane and ticketing is never enforced

Cars go way too fast on South University and I don't feel safe riding my bike there (even though there's a dock right at the corner)

A lot of students (myself included) live off of Ann Street and bike to class in the morning, but we have to compete with morning traffic and their road rage. A bike lane here would be amazing

30% of UM students have at least one class on North Campus and it's crazy that the only way they can currently (safely) get there is by bus. We need a bike highway for the entire way between Central and North. Your engineering students will thank you!

Description: The graph presents the visitor timeline over several months, showing both visitors and visits. The number of unique visitors per month remains relatively steady, fluctuating roughly between 30 and 90 visitors. The number of visits shows more noticeable variation, with several spikes during the period, particularly in the middle months, reaching over 300 visits at its peak.
